Good book
This short book effectively illustrates John Brown's distinctive place in American history. He was a daring abolitionist who became famous for practicing armed insurrection as a means to abolish slavery before the Civil War. He commanded the Pottawatomie Massacre and became notorious for the raid at Harpers Ferry Arsenal.
The pictures as well as the story explain Brown as a controversial man because he represents good and evil in one person. The story lets the reader decide if he is a martyr, hero or downright crazy. Although Brown was unsuccessful at Harpers Ferry, he electrified the nation and escalated tensions that led to the Civil War. The book is a very quick read, but I would have liked to know more about what happened to Brown's second wife and surviving children.
John Brown was one of the most aggressive opponents of slavery. He traveled widely to gather support for his cause. Many people helped him along the way. He was a radical agitator who used violence against slave owners to further the antislavery movement.
This book is a short biography with numerous illustrations. I highly recommend it to others interested in the abolitionist era. The author skillfully presents a story of a man and his family who dared to oppose the institution of slavery. The author discusses in depth the Harpers Ferry Raid and clarifies the capture of Brown and his raiders.
It was fascinating to learn how many times Brown met with Frederick Douglass and how their friendship advanced. The two men possessed distinctly different backgrounds yet both shared their passion for freedom for all Americans.
The entries are diverse and informative. Testimony of Israel Green is very interesting, tried to stab ol' JB through the chest, but bent his sword instead!

John Brown is an obsessive and compulsive abolitionist who attempts to defeat slavery in the United States before the civil war. He is unsuccessful, yet causes quite a stir and captures the nation’s attention. Brown crosses paths with so many historically significant people such as Frederick Douglass, President Pierce, Robert E. Lee and many more.
Style
The writing style is straightforward and concise. It lays out the trials and tribulations of Brown’s journey. The interesting illustrations separate this book from other books.
Thoughts
This book carefully discussed John Brown’s meetings and whereabouts throughout his lifetime. It is easy for a high school or middle school student to understand. I feel this book successfully clarifies why and how Brown accomplished the Harpers Ferry Raid.
